Just a one and a half hours drive from Kuala Lumpur International Airport or two hours from KL city is the picturesque Portuguese colonial port of Malacca. The influence of the Portuguese, Dutch and British traders and military, who have controlled this vital port, have left a distinct legacy visible through the varying architectural forms. The historic centre is Dutch Square where the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the Dutch Stadhuys (Town Hall), now a museum, and St Paul’s Church on St Paul’s Hill form a fascinating insight into old Malacca. The renowned Porta de Santiago, St John’s Fort and Jonkers Street, famous throughout the Orient for its antique shops, are an ideal place for browsing and buying. The town is easily covered on foot, or you could opt for a leisurely trishaw ride through the narrow streets.
