The facts:

Flight duration: Cape Town is approximately 12 hours (non-stop flights) from the UK and Johannesburg approximately 11 hours (non-stop).

Recommended airlines flying non-stop to Cape Town: British Airways. Non-stop flights to Johannesburg are also available with British Airways, South African Airways & Virgin Atlantic

Local time: GMT +2 hours.

Currency: South African Rand.

Language: There are 11 official languages, namely: English, Afrikaans, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga. English is the language most widely understood and is the second language of the majority of South Africans.

Passports & Visas: A full British passport, which is machine readable and valid for six months beyond your return date is required.

Travelling with children: Parents travelling with children into or out of South Africa may be asked to show the child’s unabridged full birth certificate, and where only one parent is accompanying, parental or legal consent for the child to travel (eg an affidavit from the other parent, a court order or – if applicable – a death certificate). You should travel with these documents in case you’re asked to provide them. There are other requirements for children travelling unaccompanied or with adults who are not their parents. For more information, contact the South African High Commission www.southafricahouseuk.com or the South African Department of Home Affairs www.dha.gov.za.

Health: Vaccinations may be required and are strongly recommended. Your GP will be able to provide you with specific advice on the destinations in your itinerary.

Best time to travel: South Africa lies in the southern hemisphere, so the peak of summer is February and the heart of winter falls in August. Spring and autumn are usually pleasantly warm and sunny. While summer is delightfully hot it’s also when the most rainfall occurs, however this is usually a brief, heavy downpour so rarely rains all day. The main exception is the Western Cape which has rain in the winter and hot, dry summers. The high lying areas of the interior can be chilly in winter.
