Landlocked between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos is a land of rolling mountains, jungles and the mighty Mekong River, where centuries-old traditions endure. In Vientiane, tree-lined boulevards mix ancient ruins with colonial cafes. UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang, the spiritual heart of Laos, enchants with gilded wats, alms-giving monks and nearby Kuang Si Falls. Elsewhere, discover Vang Vieng's scenery, Khmer ruins at Champasak's Wat Phou, rural charm in Nong Khiaw, and the mysterious Plain of Jars. Beyond these highlights, Laos remains a patchwork of green and backwater towns, best explored via a leisurely Mekong river cruise.
