In nearby Scalloway an excellent museum tells the story of the top-secret WWII Shetland Bus operation. Further south on Mainland is Sumburgh Head, an ideal spot for twitchers with unobstructed views of the seabird colonies; Old Scatness, a recently excavated Iron Age village; and the Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse settlements, with archaeological treasures from over 4,000 years.

With their northerly location, the best time to visit is between March and November, with the long days of summer a particularly appealing time.
Travel Information
Direct or connecting flights to Sumburgh Airport are available from Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heathrow, Inverness and Manchester. Alternatively, NorthLink Ferries sail nightly from Aberdeen to Lerwick, with reclining seats, sleeping pods and cabins available. Ferries and flights also connect Shetland with Orkney. Car hire is available, and return taxi transfers from Sumburgh Airport, around 40 minutes from Lerwick, can be pre-booked.
