Remote and secluded, 85% of Stewart Island forms Rakiura National Park which boasts a thriving bird population of more than 100 bird species. Activities on the island include scenic walks, kayaking, fishing and golf, or perhaps take a glass bottom boat trip for a unique view of the amazing undersea life.
Wildlife, particularly birds, are perhaps the greatest attraction and as you explore you may be lucky enough to see the native kiwi bird in the wild. You may also spot tui, bellbirds, grey warblers, fantails, red-crowned parakeets, bush parrots and Stewart Island robins.
While possible to visit Dunedin year round, the summer months of November to April tend to be the busiest and most popular. Invercargill and Stewart Island are also accessible throughout the year, with the warmest weather between December and March.
Ferries depart from Bluff for Stewart Island and take an hour.
