There really isn’t a bad time to visit South Island, although there is a far greater seasonal difference than on the North Island. In winter temperatures can get as low as -10ºC while summers can experience temperatures as high as 40ºC. The west coast of South Island has the island’s highest rainfall.
Christchurch is an international gateway with direct flights from Asia. Other airports on the South Island include Nelson, Blenheim, Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill.

The islands are very different. The South is known for dramatic alpine scenery, lakes and glaciers and adventure activities. The North is famed for its rich Maori culture, geothermal wonders, and warmer temperatures.
As with the rest of New Zealand peak season is Dec-Feb, but the South Island is also particular beautiful during the Autumn months, Apr-May. Winter sports enthusiasts can ski and snowboard in July-August.
