As jaw-dropping today as it was to David Livingstone in 1855, Victoria Falls (known as Mosi-oa-Tunya - the smoke that thunders) straddles the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe and is a true blockbuster. Wider than Niagara and higher than Iguazu, Victoria Falls is the world’s greatest curtain of falling water and one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
The lion’s share of the falls are in Zimbabwe and it’s here that you’ll get the best overall impression of their sheer scale. Numerous vantage points run along the gorge inside Victoria Falls National Park including Devil’s Cataract, Danger Point and the show-stopping Main Falls.
On the Zambian side, lookout points in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park provide alternative perspectives....
Your decision on which side of the falls you will stay will probably be dictated by the time of year you choose to travel, as the water flow varies according to the time of year. Generally, if you visit from mid January to May the Zambian side is preferable, but as the waters diminish from June to early January, the thundering waters are best see Hwange can be visited all year round.
Victoria Falls airport in Zimbabwe or Livingstone airport in Zambia are around 1.45 hours flying time from Johannesburg.
