Part of the Inner Hebrides, the Isle of Mull has an abundance of scenery, culture and wildlife to discover. Its past stretches from early Viking settlers to tales of the Spanish Armada. Much of it can be uncovered among ancient ruins, dramatic historic monuments and evocative deserted townships. Don’t miss Tobermory, the island’s main town, famous for its colourful harbourside buildings.
Ferries cross from Oban to Craignure, a short drive from historic Duart Castle, ancestral seat of Clan Maclean, which overlooks the Sound of Mull. Elsewhere, relax on the white sands of Calgary Bay, climb Ben More, the island’s only Munro, or take an ethical boat trip in search of wildlife.
With their northerly location, the best time to visit is between March and November, with the long days of summer a particularly appealing time.
Ferries sail from Oban to Craignure. From Fionnphort, in the south-west of Mull, a small ferry crosses to the Isle of Iona.
